Short-range interactions and scaling near integer quantum Hall transitions

چکیده
We study the influence of short-range electron-electron interactions on scaling behavior near the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions. Short-range interactions are known to be irrelevant at the renormalization group fixed point which represents the transition in the noninteracting system. We find, nevertheless, that transport properties change discontinuously when interactions are introduced. Most importantly, in the thermodynamic limit the conductivity at finite temperature is zero without interactions, but nonzero in the presence of arbitrarily weak interactions. In addition, scaling as a function of frequency v and temperature T is determined by the scaling variable v/T ~where p is the exponent for the temperature dependence of the inelastic scattering rate! and not by v/T , as it would be at a conventional quantum phase transition described by an interacting fixed point. We express the inelastic exponent p and the thermal exponent zT in terms of the scaling dimension 2a,0 of the interaction strength and the dynamical exponent z ~which has the value z52), obtaining p5112a/z and zT52/p .

Scaling in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect: interactions and low magnetic fields
Recent developments in the scaling theory of the integer quantum Hall effect are discussed. In particular, the influence of electron-electron interactions on the critical behavior are studied. It is further argued that recent experiments on the disappearance of the quantum Hall effect at low magnetic fields support rather than disprove the scaling theory , when interpreted properly. While the r...
متن کاملPeak Values of Conductivity in Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
The diagonal conductivity usr was measured in the Corbino geometry in both integer and fractional quantum Hall effect (QHE). We find that peak values of g=.+ are approximately equal for transitions in a wide range of integer filling factors 3 < v < 16, as expected in scaling theories of QHE. This fact allows us to compare peak values in the integer and fractional regimes within the framework of...
متن کاملEffects of electron-electron interactions on the integer quantum Hall transitions.
We study the effects of electron-electron interaction on the critical properties of the plateau transitions in the integer quantum Hall effect. We find the renormalization group dimension associated with short-range interactions to be −0.66 ± 0.04. Thus the non-interacting fixed point (characterized z = 2 and ν ≈ 2.3) is stable. For the Coulomb interaction, we find the correlation effect is a m...
متن کاملScaling properties of conductance at integer quantum Hall plateau transitions
We investigate the scaling properties of zero-temperature conductances at integer quantum Hall plateau transitions in the lowest Landau band of a two-dimensional tight-binding model. Scaling is obeyed for all energy and system sizes with critical exponent n' 7 3 . The arithmetic average of the conductance at the localization-delocalization critical point is found to be ^G&c50.506e /h , in agree...
متن کاملUniversality at integer quantum Hall transitions
We report in this paper results of experimental and theoretical studies of transitions between different integer quantum Hall phases, as well as transition between the insulating phase and quantum Hall phases at high magnetic fields. We focus mainly on universal properties of the transitions. We demonstrate that properly defined conductivity tensor is universal at the transitions. We also prese...
